Visions and Values

Our visions and values are at the core of everything we do. They underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils as confident, happy citizens.

We are passionate about giving children who have difficulties in their learning, associated with dyslexia (SPLd), dyspraxia and dyscalculia, the best possible education and emotional support.

We know, with the proper support these talented children can overcome many of their difficulties and reach their full potential.

School Statement

Chiltern School is a small school registered for thirty children, which was established in September 1995, for children with specific learning difficulties (dyslexia.)
Jane Gaudie worked in mainstream primary education and trained and taught with the Dyslexia Institute. The school developed as a small day school in their own home and grounds. On this site the school grew from three children to sixteen children. In 2001 the school moved to new facilities in Otterbourne. The school now has places for thirty children and is registered with the DfE .

 

The ethos is best seen in our four aims for a Chiltern School leaver which we believe to be essential to achieve happiness, contentment and fulfilment in later life. It is hoped that a child leaving our school will be:

• well educated with a love of learning, ready to engage with a wider world;
• happy, friendly and self-confident with a good sense of humour;
• generous in spirit, proud of their talents and can celebrate the talents of others;
• wanting to take their place in society, and have a clear understanding of British Values.

 

The aim of the school is to provide a happy, supportive and caring environment in which children who are not reaching their potential will be motivated to learn.
Children are provided with strategies to build up their
self -esteem and to acquire essential skills in order to make a successful return to mainstream education.


In the last five years all the children leaving Chiltern have returned to mainstream schools.

 

Our school motto is  ‘No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.’

 

Integral to this is providing a holistic approach, which fosters and develops a caring community, where everyone feels respected and valued. Children from any (or no) faith background attend this school.

 

We strive to help all children reach their full potential emotionally, academically, creatively, physically and socially, in a stimulating environment where teaching and learning go hand in hand with pastoral care. The school is a happy, safe and supportive environment that aims to give every child confidence and a true sense of worth. Most of the children who come to us have had difficulty in being able to learn elsewhere.  We find that these children soon develop the confidence and self-belief that allows them to flourish in this environment.

At Chiltern Tutorial School

 

At Chiltern teachers plan lessons that match work to the needs of all the pupils in their class or group

Teachers respond to pupils’ diverse learning needs, set suitable learning challenges and overcome potential barriers to learning .

 

Accurate formative assessment is key, so that teachers know where pupils already are.

However, this on its own is not sufficient. Teachers need to know at what level the pupil should be operating in relation to their age. Identify the gaps that needs to be closed.

Teachers ensure that each learner is working at the limit of their Zone of Proximal Development (Vygotsky’s ZPD) as far as possible.

 

The overriding principle at Chiltern Tutorial School is to instill children with the confidence to learn and to close the gaps in their attainment, in order that they may make a successful return to a mainstream school environment.

Our curriculum provides a specialised, multi-sensory approach with an emphasis on basic literacy and numeracy skills combined with access to the full National Curriculum.

Therefore, each pupil follows a carefully structured, individualised programme of work designed to remediate difficulties and provide a sound basis for future study. This principle extends to all areas of the curriculum and ensures that our pupils have access to the full range of subjects that will prepare them for their secondary school and adult life.

Whereas in mainstream education pupils study Key Stages according to their chronological age, at Chiltern Tutorial they study according to their individual needs. Consequently, Key Stage 1 material is available for pupils  who still need to master the most basic skills even though they are of an age that normally suggests the teaching of a Key Stage 2 curriculum. This facility exists throughout the school with the overriding ethos that we do not teach a curriculum, we teach the child!

When your child arrives at our school all the children retell the story about the mole the fish and the bird. This story teaches children that

The mole the fish and the bird

“No one can do everything,
but everyone can do something”

Once upon a time there was mole, a fish and a bird.  They decided to have a competition.  The first task they set themselves was to swim across the lake.

In jumped the mole. He moved his arms through the water but it just rushed between his claws. The bird tried next. He flew into the water but the water weighed his wings down and he soon had to give up. Then in dived the fish, he swam swiftly to the other side of the lake.

Now the next task was to make a tunnel. The bird tried first. He pecked and pecked at the ground and made a small hole but he had to give up because he became so tired. The fish tried to peck the ground but he had to give up sooner than the bird. Next came the mole. He pushed his snout to the ground and in no time at all he was burrowing into the ground making a magnificent tunnel.

The final task was to climb to the top of an old oak tree. The fish wriggled to the foot of the tree but could not even attempt to climb the rough bark. Up rushed the mole. He stretched out his claws and hung on to the bark for a short time but made very little movement up the tree. The bird looked on quietly, he fluffed up his feathers and flew smoothly to the top of the old oak tree.…………………
